Program Description

SIUE's Intensive English Program is staffed by committed individuals with advanced degrees in Teaching English as a Second Lanaguage. The program, which has had excellent results preparing students for both undergraduate and graduate work at SIUE, is designed to meet the needs of students with intermediate to advanced levels of English proficiency. The IEP emphasizes English for academic purposes and offers a full curriculum with classes in reading, academic writing, grammar, and listening and speaking skills. In addition to approximately 20 hours of classroom instruction per week, students also benefit from TOEFL preparation and cultural field trip activities.

Located in southwestern Illinois at the edge of the town of Edwardsville (population 20,000). Edwardsville is just a half an hour drive from St. Louis, Missouri, a major American city.

For detailed application information, visit http://www.siue.edu/CE/IEP. To apply to the Intensive English Program, students must have completed their secondary education, present evidence of financial support for all expenses for at least the first year of study at SIUE, and provide evidence of an intermediate to advanced level of English language proficiency by means of an official TOEFL score (minimum score requirement is 117 computer-based TOEFL score). Prospective students who are applying from outside the United States should apply at least three months before the start of the semester to allow enough time for the processing of the application, I-20 preparation, mail delivery, and time required for the visa application and other departing preparations. Prospective students who are already in the United States should send all application materials at least one month before the start of the semester.
