American Language Program

Program Description

There are two 12-week intensive semesters, beginning in September and February. An intensive 4-week Winter Institute is offered in January, and there are three consecutive 4-week Summer Institute courses beginning in late May, June and July. All intensive courses consist of 20 hours of classroom instruction and language laboratory work per week. The ALP also offers part-time courses at the intermediate to advanced levels, pronunciation and advanced fluency workshops, a TOEFL preparation course, professional seminars in English for business or law, and credit-bearing university composition course. The ALP is distinguished as a leader in innovative curriculum design. Its courses are academic in focus, and are offered on 10 levels of proficiency, from beginning to highly advanced.

A number of dormitory room on or near campus are available to full-time ALP students. All rooms must be reserved well in advance through the ALP office.

Columbia is located in New York City, the center of American art, business and finance. The University sits on Manhattan's Upper West Side, in a lively residential and commercial neighborhood known as Morningside Heights, on a hill above the Hudson River. Although its campus is graced by green lawns and shade trees, it is at heart a great urban university. Boston, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. are all less than three and a half hours away by car or train.
